The Goth Kid Monologue and the 80s Goth Scene

The Goth Kid Monologue is a short film created by Ashley Nicole. Based off of the 1980s goth scene a fashion takeover that no one saw coming. As Ashley says "It’s actually one of my favorite eras of the goth scene. It’s about self expression, since people tend to think that it's sad and depressing it's actually creative and unique. The reason it's one of my favorite eras is because it's vintage, and it was barely coming into style. This was something that people never seen before and to me that's what makes it unique, it was new and fresh." The Goth Kid Monologue is almost like a love letter to 80s goth culture. The short film is so beautifully done and even perked my interest in the history of this scene. If you love goth culture or interested in it I highly recommend you to check out this short film. This scene started in the early 1980's and developed by music fans. Genre's such as Post-punk, Darkwave, and Gothic Rock all help create this fashion craze. Bands such as the Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees all held inspiration for the current goth scene. The fashion created in this period was dark, morbid, and extravagant. The style took inspiration from the current trends of the 80s but also took inspiration from the Victorian and Edwardian eras as well. If you're new to goth and just starting out Ashley suggests taking a look at stores like Spirit Halloween and Hot topic. Let's take a look at the fashion of this early goth scene:

Big Hair:

Big hair was all the rage in this style. 1980s was known for big hair but the goths of this time definitely made it a staple of they style. The separated bangs were my favorite hairstyle to this scene. To achieve this look takes a lot of hair spray and wax with lots of teasing. Here are some videos on how you can get this hair:

Lace:

Black lace tops and gloves were popular and still are popular in the goth style. This trend was most likely based off of the Victorian age. The lace was dark with over the top designs and usually used as a base for the outfit as in this style there was lots of layering. Here are some black lace products to help you achieve this look:

Leather:

Black leather was very big with this style. Jackets, pants, shoes, and much more were covered in black leather. The leather boots were huge usually being platforms as well. Here are some black leather products to help you get the goth leather look:
